The Full-Funnel Story: Using PR to Fuel Marketing and Vice Versa

SHARON SIM • August 17, 2026

A great brand story isn't a single headline. It's a sustained conversation, built one deliberate touchpoint at a time.

Think of PR and marketing as instruments in the same orchestra. Played separately, they compete for attention. Played together — earned media, advertising, content, social — they compound into something audiences actually remember. That distinction matters more than ever: today's audiences don't move in a straight line from awareness to purchase. The brands that break through are the ones that treat every channel as part of one composition, using PR to earn credibility, marketing to deepen engagement, and storytelling to carry both toward action.

Creating Brand Harmony

Every channel plays a different note, but without a conductor, those notes collide instead of combine. An integrated strategy is what keeps them in tempo, turning individual touchpoints into recognition, trust, and durable customer relationships.

SKC client
Taiwan Excellence's debut at HIMSS 2026 shows what that discipline looks like in practice. PR strategy, media relations, executive storytelling, a high-impact press conference, and immersive on-site experiences didn't just run in parallel, they were built to reinforce one another, introducing Taiwan's healthcare innovations to a global stage as a single, cohesive story rather than a series of isolated moments.

Setting the Tone Before the First Note

The strongest brands do their real work before a customer ever enters the funnel. Just as the opening phrases of an orchestral piece set the tone for everything that follows, PR lays the foundation for how a brand is perceived, through earned media, expert validation, and thought leadership that make every subsequent marketing dollar work harder.

Oura’s 2020 research collaboration with UCSF on wearable technology and health insights positioned the company as a science-backed health authority, not just a device maker. The credibility that followed, media attention, third-party validation, gave marketing something rare to build on: trust that didn't have to be manufactured.

Beyond the First Movement

Media coverage is a starting point, not a finish line. In an orchestra, rhythm comes from a full percussion section working in concert, not one instrument. Communications strategy should move the same way, one PR moment becoming the seed for blogs, social content, newsletters, video, and campaigns that extend the story long after the initial coverage fades.

In 2023,
Peloton's "The Comeback" showed the payoff of one PR campaign carried across multiple channels in synchrony. By building the campaign around real member stories, Peloton carried a single narrative across advertising, social, media conversations, and community engagement, turning one moment into a sustained relationship with its audience, rather than a single message that came and went.

Understanding the Whole Composition

A musician who only knows their own part misses the piece entirely. The same is true in communications. Marketing insight, what audiences care about, which messages land, where authentic stories live, sharpens PR's instincts and keeps every channel pointed at the same narrative across the full funnel.

Bumble's 2024 rebrand is a cautionary example of what happens when that insight is skipped. The campaign set out to address dating fatigue, but it read the symptom rather than the cause, and missed the deeper frustrations driving that sentiment, triggering real backlash from its community. Like an orchestra performing from the wrong score, the message was technically delivered but fundamentally out of step with the audience it was meant to reach.

The Final Measure of Success

An orchestra moves an audience not through any one player, but through every section performing in sync. Integrated communications works the same way. Success isn't measured by awareness alone anymore, it's measured by how PR, marketing, content, and engagement move audiences from discovery through consideration, action, and lasting growth.

Chipotle’s 2019 #GuacDance  campaign shows what that looks like when it's working. The TikTok challenge invited fans to share avocado-inspired dance videos, pairing influencer partnerships with user-generated content and social engagement, generating 430 million video starts and driving the brand's biggest National Avocado Day on record. It's a clear case of coordinated storytelling translating directly into measurable business results.

The strongest brands don't treat PR and marketing as separate performances running on parallel stages. They build every channel around one story and let each effort build on the last. That's when communications stops being a visibility exercise and becomes what it should be: a driver of trust, engagement, and lasting growth.
